DAVID JAMES ARCHULETA
If anybody knows only one thing about me, it’s usually that I’m a huge David Archuleta fan. Most people who know me know that I’ve met him a bunch of times, I try to go see him whenever he’s in the area, and that he’s overall really special to me. What most people wonder though, is why? Why am I such a huge fan? Why is he so important to me? I figured I will use this to take the time to explain just why David Archuleta is more than just some singer to me.
1) HIS TALENT : David’s AMAZING voice is what initially drew me to him. I remember watching his audition on American Idol, and I was SUPER impressed. I thought his voice was beautiful and mature beyond his years. It was also amazing how he could sing the way he did with all of his vocal problems. He can sing long sets without getting worn out, and hearing him live just gives you complete chills. I have been to performances of his where the audience was just in complete silence as he sang because they were in awe of his amazing talent. Quite a few of his performances have actually brought me to tears. His voice is angelic, yet powerful and could easily give anybody goose bumps.
2) HIS MUSIC : Unlike most artists out there today David’s music has meaning. His songs talk about things normal, everyday people can relate to. He doesn’t talk about getting drunk, being too cool for school, complaining about life, or having a an unrealistic fairy-tale ending like most singers today do. He talks about not taking anything in life for granted, not giving up on your dreams, having faith that struggles in life will get better, and waiting for your true love to come rather than rushing into it. These themes are especially reflected in his new album “The Other Side of Down”. THESE are songs that people like us can relate to and SHOULD be listening to. I also love that he won’t succomb to writing about the typical junk other musicians sing about. He stays true to himself in his music.
3) HIS PERSONALITY : Anybody really only has to see one interview with David to realize how incredibly sweet he is. He’s a truly genuine person. But he’s also very shy and kind of self-conscious. He’s also kind of silly and a little goofy. Not to mention he’s kind of a dork, and can be a little spacey. Now, you’re probably wondering “how are all of these traits attractive?!”. Well I’ll tell you how…it makes him REAL! He doesn’t go around acting like he’s so cool. He doesn’t pretend to be someone he’s not. He’s probably very much like the quirky kid you sit next to in class. But you know what? For a celebrity, simple traits like this are hard to find. Another great thing about David’s personality, is that he’s SO modest and humble. He doesn’t think highly of himself. He knows he’s the not the buffest, manliest, or the smoothest guy out there, and he’s okay with that! He doesn’t try to become or pretend he’s something that he’s not. He may not always be comfortable with himself, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to try to change. I would take these traits over a juice head with a six pack ANY DAY!
4) HE’S TRUE TO HIMSELF : David has in no means let his fame get to his head. Even after all the success that he’s had these past 2 and half years, he still remains true to his faith, his family, and his morals. You never see him in the tabloids getting into any kind of trouble. Anytime that he has time off, he goes home and spends time with his family and friends. He still goes to church every Sunday, even when he’s on the road. He’s not ashamed to talk about his faith and share it with his fans and the rest of the public. He doesn’t even go out or perform wearing fancy and expensive clothes! He’s fine in simply a t-shirt and jeans. (and he still looks AWESOME I might add ;-) ) He doesn’t try to be “David Archuleta: WORLD SUPERSTAR”. He simply just wants to be, David Archuleta.
5) HE’S SO GOOD TO HIS FANS : I don’t think David realizes it, but he really treats his fans like gold and makes us feel so special! He takes time out of his day to tweet and keep us in the loop on what he’s up to. He tries to respond to our comments on twitter as much as he possibly can. He reads through ALL of our letters and tries his best to actually write back to everyone. At his appearences he will make a strong effort to come out and greet his fans. If it’s up to him, he will stand outside as long as needed to make sure everyone gets at least an autograph and a friendly smile from him. If his “people” are rushing him, he will STILL make an effort to at least shake everyone’s hand, apologize for not being able to stay, and thank them for coming and supporting him. At his book signings, he would not leave until everyone’s book was signed by him. That meant that he ended up being at the bookstores for at least four hours. He really makes us feel like we’re truly important to him.
6) HE’S BEEN SUCH AN INSPIRATION TO ME : On a more personal note, David has really been such a huge influence on me. As I mentioned earlier, David struggles with self-esteem issues and doesn’t have a lot of confidence in himself. I am the same way. I have no confidence in myself at all. I think I’m ugly, stupid, and that there is always someone out there better than me at the stuff that I’m actually good at. David helped me realize that even through my harsh insecurites, I can still make it life, and achieve my goals. I figured if someone like David, who also had an extreme lack of self-confidence, can get over that and go for his dreams and actually reach them, then so can I. If he can go from being such a shy and insecure teenager, to such a beautiful, talented, and amazing person, then I can do the same. He has truly taught me that absolutely nothing is impossible. I owe a lot to him for that.
So basically, this is why David Archuleta means so much to me. He’s the realest celebrity I know of, and he makes it an absolute joy to be a fan of his. Now I didn’t write this to try to convince people to become a fan, or to change an opinion about him if you have one. I’m just answering the question “why?”. I hope this all makes a little more sense now. :-)
